Coco Chanel's Parisian Bombay

A stellar line-up of models took to the magical surround: there was Yasmin and Amber Le Bon, the newly crowned British Fashion Awards' Model of the Year Stella Tennant and model du jour Arizona Muse. They paraded in regal shades of fuchsia, snowy white, gold and silver; in tweed dresses and coats; in swathes of pearls; in metallic saris and embroidered jumpers, hand-painted floral motifs and heavily kohl-rimmed eyes.

"It's all about refinement. It's the Paris version of the idea of India," explained Lagerfeld - who himself has never been to India but drew on Coco Chanel's Fifties and Sixties vision of it. "She designed several Indian-inspired outfits - and that was enough," he toldWWD. "Most of the inspiration is from Indian men's clothes rather than women's clothes. They're easier to wear."
